(BROOKVILLE, Ind.) – Former Indiana Governor Otis Bowan dedicated Brookville Lake nearly fifty years ago on July 26, 1975.
The lake was built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) with the purpose of flood control downstream on the Whitewater River.
Since its initial opening, Brookville Lake has undergone many changes to provide visitors with more amenities and recreation options including hiking and biking trails and improved beaches and campgrounds.
Though there have been many changes, the USACE’s biggest accomplishment is the lives and property they have been able to protect.
The 50-year celebration will take place at 1 p.m. on Friday, July 25. It will be held at the Overlook Recreation Area which is located at 10085 Overlook Road in Brookville.
There will also be a variety of events this week including on a trip down memory lane, commemorating the era when the lake was built through a 70’s theme parade and live music from the decade.
Brookville Lake Park Ranger, Stephanie Ison, describes this event as an opportunity to honor Old Fairfield and recognize all the lake has brought to the community. “It's a way for people to gather and share stories and share pictures,” she said.
Below are fliers outlining the events to come:
