Cyclospora case confirmed in Jefferson County

(MADISON, Ind.) – A confirmed case of Cyclospora has been identified in Jefferson County.
Cyclospora is a foodborne parasitic illness that causes “explosive” diarrhea.
Last week, several cases were confirmed in Marion County as well as other states.
"Fresh produce, including certain fruits and vegetables, has been associated with Cyclospora outbreaks in the past. Cyclospora is not typically spread directly from person to person," the Jefferson County Health Department stated.
Some symptoms include prolonged watery diarrhea, loss of appetite or weight loss, stomach cramping or bloating, Fatigue, increased gas, low-grade fever
"The Jefferson County Health Department encourages anyone experiencing persistent diarrhea or other symptoms consistent with cyclosporiasis to contact their healthcare provider. Diagnosis requires specific laboratory testing, and the infection is treatable with prescription antibiotics," the health department said.
Illness have been linked to:
Bagged salad mixes
Fresh herbs (including cilantro and basil)
Berries
Green onions
Other fresh fruits and vegetables
Residents can help reduce their risk of foodborne illness by:
• Washing fresh fruits and vegetables thoroughly under running water before eating, cutting, or cooking them.
• Washing hands with soap and water before preparing or eating food and after using the restroom.
• Cooking as much fresh produce as possible before consuming.
At this time, no specific food item has been identified as the source of these cases. The investigation is ongoing, and additional information will be shared if it becomes available.
