(GREENSBURG, Ind.) – Decatur County deputies spent Saturday collecting non-perishable food for the less fortunate.
The sheriff’s office teamed up with Greensburg Bread of Life, which is a nonprofit soup kitchen that provides free meals to those in need.
The donation drive was held at the Greensburg Wal-Mart and was organized by John Bundick who serves as a member of the sheriff department's Crisis Intervention Team.
“The sheriff’s department leading this is such a blessing. They were already planning to do this but the timing of it is perfect with what is going on in our government,” said Greensburg Bread of Life executive director Melissa Foist.
Altogether, the donation drive resulted in approximately 5,300 pounds of nonperishable food being collected.
Foist said Greensburg Bread of Life is prepared to handle an influx of new people utilizing the soup kitchen due to the government shutdown.
The nonprofit is accepting canned goods and dry food, and you can get more information about donating to Greensburg Bread of Life by clicking here.
With Thanksgiving approaching, Greensburg Bread of Life is also seeking around 175 donations of turkeys.
