Decatur County youth get free heart screenings during DCMH event

ree

(GREENSBURG, Ind.) – Decatur County Memorial Hospital hosted a heart screening event for local youth.

The hospital partnered with Giving Hearts A Hand as well as the MCORE Foundation and it was held at Decatur County YMCA.

There were 30 students from Greensburg Junior and Senior High, North Decatur Junior and Senior High, South Decatur Junior and Senior High, and St. Mary’s Catholic School who participated in the screening event.

Each student received an electrocardiogram (ECG) and a limited echocardiogram, with results reviewed by pediatric cardiologists.

The exams help detect hidden risk factors that can lead to Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA), a life-threatening condition that often strikes without warning and affects one in every 215 children.

"We’re proud to bring this level of care directly into the community," said Lisa Oldham, Rehabilitation Services Director at DCMH. “Events like these truly reflect our mission to keep our community healthy and safe, not just by treating illness, but by preventing it whenever we can.”

Now in its fourth year, this annual screening initiative is part of DCMH’s broader commitment to community outreach and preventive health. The event was made possible through the continued collaboration with the MCORE Foundation, a nationally recognized nonprofit dedicated to preventing SCA through education, screening, and research, and the support of Giving Hearts A Hand.

“We’re incredibly thankful to our partners and supporters who help us bring these resources to Decatur County year after year,” added Oldham. “These screenings give families peace of mind, and in some cases, they can change the course of a child’s life.”
