DMCH transportation program making life-changing difference for woman

(GREENSBURG, Ind.) – Getting reliable transportation to medical appointments has made a life-changing difference for 54-year-old Abby Fleenor.

“I am visually impaired and have Leber Congenital Amaurosis, or LCA,” Abby explained. “This transportation has changed my life and my health because I am making it to my appointments regularly.”

Before Abby had access to Decatur County Memorial Hospital’s (DCMH) transportation program, getting to medical visits was a challenge that often affected her overall well-being. 

“The hospital transportation service is very important to me because I don’t have to worry about missing my appointments anymore,” Abby said. “I found challenges scheduling transportation with other ride services. I had to worry if my ride would follow through.”

She says the difference now is like night and day. “The bus driver, Scott, is so friendly and so nice that anybody who takes a ride on the bus feels much better after being in his presence,” she added with a smile. “Scott is an awesome person and driver!”

But for Abby, the impact goes beyond just improved health; it’s also about connection.

“We have the opportunity while on the bus to even socialize with people,” she said. “I don’t have a lot of socialization in my life, so it’s really nice to be able to talk with other people.”

One recent ride stands out vividly in her mind. “A couple of weeks ago, I was on the bus and there were about five of us riding together. Before each person got off, they made a point to either touch someone on the shoulder or just say, ‘Have a nice day.’ And that was so heartwarming.”

Because of the generosity of donors to the Hospital Foundation of Decatur County (Hospital Foundation) and the dedication of DCMH’s team, Abby can continue living a healthier, more connected life. 

“Transportation may seem like a small thing,” she said, “but for me, it’s given me independence, health, and community.”
