Dolly Parton wasn't just an icon to local musician, she was a friend

(NASHVILLE, TN.) -- Dolly Parton made a profound impact on a local musician and band. 

Milan native Jamie Johnson is a member of the Grammy-nominated bluegrass band The Grascals. 

He and his fellow bandmates have known Dolly for many years as they used to tour with her earlier in their career.

Their relationship grew to go far beyond music as Johnson said she was a true friend and mentor. 

He describes Dolly as more of a family member and that she is one of the biggest blessings in his life. 

“If I did have money I could never repay Dolly for all she has done for myself, The Grascals and my family,” Johnson told The 812. 

He added, “She was everything one would think and times ten. I’m still in shock like everyone else for we didn’t see this coming, however, I’m sure glad God picked her to be Dolly Parton.

Last October, Johnson and Parton co-wrote a powerful song called ‘Broken Angels.’

The song addresses the struggles of addiction and mental health. Jamie reached out to Dolly and asked if she could lend a hand.

Dolly made a video when the song was released and she said, “I have loved The Grascals as long as I can remember and the amazing Jamie Johnson is one of bluegrass music’s best vocalists.”
