(LIBERTY, Ind.) – First responders in Union County saved the life of a farmer who was trapped in a grain bin on Thursday.
Firefighters and police responded around 10 a.m. to a property on East Kitchel Road near Liberty.
One of the first people on scene was Union County Sheriff Jeff Adams.
He says the farmer was submerged up to his neck when he got on scene.
Firefighters arrived shortly after and the farmer was submerged up to his mouth by that time.
Crews called for a frontend loader and also utilized grain bin rescue equipment during the emergency.
Firefighters also got in the grain bin and helped get the soybeans out of the farmer's face so he could breathe.
The farmer was eventually pulled from the grain bin and even walked to the ambulance.
“It was a miracle that he walked away from that. I even told one of the dispatchers to say Hallelujah,” Sheriff Adams said.
The rescue operation lasted more than an hour and there were several agencies who assisted including Oxford Fire, Richmond Fire, Boston Community Fire, College Corner Fire, and Liberty Fire.
Sheriff Adams also said there were numerous local farmers who showed up to assist the first responders.
