(CONNERSVILLE, Ind.) – The Fayette County Council democrat candidate who has garnered national attention spoke with the local newspaper about the situation.

Jamie West was interviewed by the Connersville News-Examiner who published the story on Thursday evening.

It comes after West participated in a televised candidate forum where she appeared to be slurring her words and made remarks that stated she would “fire all Republicans” and said “We have guns too.”

She told the News-Examiner that she drank one Coors Light before the candidate forum interview.

West said that she did not take any medicines or drugs that would have made her appear to be inebriated during that interview, according to the newspaper.

In regard to slurring her words, West claims she suffered a traumatic brain injury in 2020.

The newspaper did ask West about the statement regarding “We have guns too.”

West responded, "Honestly, I may slur my words a little bit, but that is just how Jaime is; that's just how she has always been. I tell it like it is."

She did add that despite some online backlash, she has received support from people across the nation saying, "I am getting more love from all around the world.”

"People are calling me the queen, saying 'We've needed her,' 'Where has this interview been.' They just love it and are so happy and wish they all lived in my district so they can vote for me,” she told the newspapet.

There have been rumors of a private mental health matter involving West in the past week. There was no mention of that by West or the newspaper.
