Greensburg Rotary cuts ribbon on new basketball tree

(GREENSBURG, Ind.) – The Rotary Club of Greensburg officially opened their new basketball tree installation at Decatur County Park on Monday. 

The basketball tree is a custom metal structure featuring multiple basketball hoops arranged in a tree-like design and can be used by all ages.

This idea was spearheaded by Rotarian Steve Freeman when he was on vacation with his fiance in Australia and saw a basketball tree. 

“She was scrolling through her phone, and this orange tree came up and caught her attention. We started looking, and it was a basketball tree similar to this, but it was in Australia,” Freeman recalled. 

Freeman discussed the concept with fellow Rotary Club members and they agreed it would be a great addition to the community.

It was fully funded through a Rotary 6580 Foundation grant and private donations. No taxpayer money was used.  

“Bill Robbins and Larry and Bev Moore also helped financially with portions of the project,” the Rotary Club stated. 

It was designed and built by K-Fab of Greensburg and Rotarians also assisted with some of the final assembly and installation.

Freeman said the project’s success was evident right after it was installed.

“The next morning, I drove by, and there were kids out here playing, and that’s what it was all about,” he said.

Some organizations and people involved in today’s ribbon cutting included Decatur County Parks and Recreation Department, Greensburg Decatur County Economic Development Corporation executive director Brian Robbins, Greensburg Mayor Joshua Marsh, Greensburg High School Athletic Director Stacy Meyer, Greensburg basketball coach Collin Rigney, and Rotary Club members.

The Greensburg Decatur County Chamber of Commerce provided the ribbon and ceremonial scissors for the event.
