The Laurel community came together on Saturday night to continue a tradition that benefits children during Christmas time.
The Long Branch Tavern organizes 'Jamfest’ each year where money is raised to purchase Christmas gifts for children in the Laurel school district.
Long Branch owner and event organizer Bev Keller said there are currently 102 children signed up for the program.
“There is also a waitlist for more children so we are waiting to see how much money we raise at Jamfest to figure out if we can help more kids,” Keller told The 812.
Proceeds from Jamfest allow secret shoppers like Krista Spurlock to buy presents that the kids truly want.
“I have each child write down three things that they want and we try to get at least one of those presents on that list,” Spurlock said. “If they want a certain baby doll and I have to go to Indianapolis to find it, I will.”
Jamfest included a cover charge, auctions, raffles, a hog roast and several bands. Keller added that while there is a $5 cover charge, it's common for residents to donate $20 or $50 at the door.
There were 20 different musicians who performed last night and each donated their time.
“All of these musicians don’t charge a dime and they could be somewhere else tonight playing for money, but they come here every year,” music organizer Prouler said.
The presents will be distributed during the Laurel Community Christmas Party on December 14.
The event will feature a pizza party, kids activities, plus Santa and the Grinch will be in attendance.
Long Branch has hosted Jamfest for upwards of 15 years. The event provided gifts for 127 children in 2024.
