(LAWRENCEBURG, Ind.) – Local democrats are voicing opposition to a proposal to redraw congressional lines in Indiana.
State lawmakers are expected to meet for a special session regarding redistricting on Monday.
Lawrenceburg Councilmember Dylan Liddle is calling for local legislators to vote against the proposed measure and says it’s an issue that won’t solve local problems.
“Ask anyone in Dearborn County what they’re worried about — it’s not congressional lines,” Liddle said. “It’s groceries, rent, and keeping good-paying jobs here at home.”
Liddle serves as chairman of the Dearborn County Democrat Party and Christine Craig serves as vice-president of the organization.
Craig is also voicing opposition through a group called Indivisible Southeast Indiana. She says the measure is not about representation, but about power.
“The cost to taxpayers is staggering. A special legislative session to redraw maps could cost over $350,000. That’s money our communities—like Lawrenceburg and the rest of Dearborn County—could use for schools, infrastructure, or public safety,” Craig said.
Both Liddle and Craig mentioned a possible Town Hall in the near future where State Senator Randy Maxwell and State Representative would be invited to attend and share their views on redistricting. No specific date or location has been announced.
Sen. Maxwell has previously stated that he plans to vote in favor of redistricting.
“At the end of the day, this isn’t left vs. right — it’s right vs. wrong,” Liddle said. “I encourage residents to contact their legislators directly and make their voices heard before the vote,” he said.
“Dearborn County and Southeast Indiana deserves better. We deserve fair maps drawn with public input, not backroom deals. Let’s protect the integrity of our elections and the voices of all Hoosiers,” Craig added.
Indiana is not alone as several states are considering redistricting measures, including a Democrat-led initiative in California
