Smith has served as principal for 28 years

(Greensburg, Ind.) – It was the end of an era at North Decatur Elementary on Thursday as Rob Smith retired after 28 years as principal.
His retirement comes after an educational career that has spanned 39 years.
The 812’s Valerie Weston stopped by North Decatur on Thursday to speak with him during his final day at school.
Looking back, Smith said that he never considered working outside of the classroom until he was approached about an administrative role.
However, while reflecting on his experience, he said he absolutely loved it and would do it all over again. During his time as principal he felt strongly that whatever he was doing, it was right if it was in the best interest of his students.
Smith has many fond memories to look back on. Among his favorites were reading with his students, field trips, grandparents day, and many PTO events. These events and traditions create an open, welcoming environment for the community to see and appreciate what is happening in the school and for students to feel seen, safe, and loved.
Creating a caring and kind school family between faculty, staff, families, and students is what he recognizes as his greatest accomplishment.
“I cannot tell you how blessed I am and how blessed I feel that I have been able to be a part of this community and this building,” Smith said.
Smith hopes and believes the school will continue to progress while the philosophy remains the same. He wishes the best for the building and everyone in it.
As he enters retirement, Smith looks forward to spending time with his family and grandkids as well as doing more traveling.
He also anticipates coming back to NDES and seeing how it has grown.
During our visit, the Class of 2025 also walked through the hallways while holding hands with elementary students:
