(BRIGHT, Ind.) – A local man is hospitalized with serious injuries after a firework-related incident in Dearborn County.
It happened around 1:30 a.m. Saturday and the victim was driven by friends or family to the Bright Fire Department.
First responders said the young man suffered facial injuries while trying to light a firework. He was rushed to a Cincinnati hospital.
The Bright Fire Department says that at least one person each year in their area is flown to a hospital due to a fireworks injury.
Nationally, there were 13,000 people injured by fireworks last year and 1,300 that were treated for injuries involving sparklers, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
The 15 to 24 age group accounted for the largest share of firework injuries.
The Indiana State Fire Marshal is providing tips on how to stay safe while using fireworks:
Maintain a safe distance from all active fireworks
Never let small children near fireworks
Have a water hose or bucket of water nearby in case of fire
Never lean over a firework when lighting
Follow all instruction labels
Never use fireworks if impaired by drugs or alcohol
