(LAWRENCEBURG, Ind.) – A young girl who organized lemonade stands in Lawrenceburg this summer has gotten the attention of a national children's cancer organization.

9-year-old Johannah Shoemaker held multiple lemonade stands and her goal was to raise $1,000 for the National Children’s Cancer Society.

She came up with this idea all by herself after learning that her grandmother had cancer.

“It must be hard for the parents and the kids who have cancer and Jesus and God just told me to do this,” Johannah said.

The National Children’s Cancer Society (NCCS) is a nonprofit headquartered in Illinois.

A member of the organization saw Johannah’s story on The 812.

“We were so touched to read about her generosity and the heart behind her efforts. It’s incredibly inspiring to see someone so young making such a meaningful difference for families facing childhood cancer,” said NCCS marketing director Elizabeth Payne.

NCCS asked for contact information for Johannah’s family so they could thank her personally and recently did so.

They described Johannah’s efforts as a reminder that you’re never too young to make a difference.

“Johannah’s efforts are a wonderful example of how compassion can bring a community together and make a meaningful difference in the lives of others,” NCCS said.

NCCS was formed in 1987 and provides support, services and resources to children, their families and survivors of childhood cancer.

With the help of compassionate donors like Johannah, the NCCS has distributed over $73 million in direct financial assistance to over 51,500 children battling cancer and their families in the United States.
