(GREENSBURG, Ind.) – A local mom and son have a unique hunting story they will certainly never forget.
The Garrison family was hunting together in a Decatur County blind while enjoying hot chocolate on Saturday afternoon.
It was around 4:35 p.m. when 8-year-old Ace Garrison happened to spot a buck.
He pulled the trigger and shot the deer, however it didn’t react or run like it was a good hit and they lost track of it.
Just two minutes later, his mom, Britni, noticed another buck that appeared from a different direction.
She made a great shot and the family began searching for both Ace's and Britni's deer.
"After lots of tracking and losing blood on Ace's deer, we used a thermal drone and found the deer that we believed Britni had shot, however it had two bullet wounds," said Ace's dad, Brad.
It turned out that the buck Ace hit with a non-lethal shot was the same one Britni unknowingly shot as well.
“After getting some sleep and shedding some tears, Ace decided he did not want to claim the deer since his shot would not have killed it,” said Brad.
Although this was technically the first buck Ace has ever shot, he decided his mom should tag it since she made the better shot.
It's been an exciting season for Ace as he harvested his first two deer ever during youth hunting season in September. He now remains committed to getting himself a buck.
The Garrison family also elected to donate the meat to those who have requested it. They have donated over 200 pounds of deer meat this year.
Here are some more photos of the last night's hunt as well as one of Ace's deer in September:
