No imminent threat at Lake McCoy Dam as officials take action

(LAKE MCCOY, Ind.) – Local and state agencies continue to actively monitor the Lake McCoy Dam in Decatur County due to structural concerns.

Officials confirm that the dam has not failed, however, it is experiencing issues with a spillway pipe.

"Agencies and engineers are monitoring the situation and implementing measures intended to reduce risk to the public, including placing rock on the dam to stabilize the embankment and redirect water," said Decatur County EMA Director Michael Snyder.

No evacuations have been ordered at this time nor is there any immediate risk to the public, officials said.

A controlled release of water will begin at 7 a.m. Sunday, June 21.

“This controlled release is a proactive mitigation measure and should not be interpreted as an indication that dam failure is imminent. The controlled release is expected to continue until the lake reaches a target elevation determined by engineers.” Snyder said.

Residents living downstream of the dam and in the surrounding area may experience increased water levels and stream flow during the operation.

“At this time, officials do not anticipate significant flooding impacts; however, residents are encouraged to exercise caution around waterways and avoid entering or recreating in areas with elevated water flows,” Snyder said.

The public is encouraged to:

  • Stay away from the dam and downstream waterways during the controlled release operation.

  • Use caution near creeks, streams, and low-water crossings that may experience increased flows.

  • Never drive through floodwaters or over flooded roadways.

  • Monitor official information sources for updates and instructions.

  • Review personal emergency plans and be prepared to act should conditions change.

"There is no immediate danger to the public at this time; however, conditions can change, and residents should remain prepared to act if emergency notifications are issued," Snyder added.

The situation is currently being monitored by the Lake McCoy Conservancy, Indiana DNR Division of Water and engineering consultants

Lake McCoy Dam is located approximately four miles east of Greensburg off State Road 46 between County Road 400 East and County Road 480 East in Decatur County.

  • Residents located downstream of Lake McCoy along Cobbs Fork.

  • Additional impacts could include: the railroad corridors, utilities, and state and county roads downstream of Lake McCoy along Cobbs Fork.
