(LAKE MCCOY, Ind.) – Local and state agencies are monitoring the Lake McCoy Dam in Decatur County due to structural concerns.
Officials confirm that the dam has not failed, however, it is experiencing issues with a spillway pipe.
No evacuations have been ordered at this time nor is there any immediate risk to the public.
“Agencies and engineers are monitoring the situation and implementing measures intended to reduce risk to the public, including placing rock on the dam to stabilize the embankment and redirect water,” said Decatur County EMA Director Michael Snyder.
The situation is currently being monitored by the Lake McCoy Conservancy, Indiana DNR Division of Water and engineering consultants
Officials are also working to lower the lake level to better manage the flow of water from the dam. The only existing road closure is a portion of Boulevard Road at the dam.
"There is no immediate danger to the public at this time; however, conditions can change, and residents should remain prepared to act if emergency notifications are issued," Snyder added.
They are also providing areas that could be impacted in the event of a dam failure:
Drivers on State Road 46 between CR 400 E and 480 E
Residents located downstream of Lake McCoy along Cobbs Fork.
Additional impacts could include: the railroad corridors, utilities, and state and county roads downstream of Lake McCoy along Cobbs Fork.
