North Decatur raises awareness about suicide, prevention

(GREENSBURG, Ind.) – Thursday marks World Suicide Prevention Day and North Decatur used it as an opportunity to raise awareness and reduce the stigma.

The counseling department put a focus on connection and supporting one another on Thursday.

The “Be the One” initiative encouraged everyone to take five simple steps: Ask, Be There, Keep Them Safe, Help Them Connect, and Follow Up.

To put those ideas into action, students and staff participated in a fun, school-wide game of Rock, Paper, Scissors, designed to build connections and encourage positive interactions throughout the school.

“Sometimes a simple conversation, a check-in, or letting someone know they matter can make a difference. North Decatur encouraged students and staff to be the one who reached out, listened, and cared,” organizers said.

The purpose of World Suicide Prevention Day is to raise awareness around the globe that suicide can be prevented.

If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health, the 988 hotline is available for support in English, Spanish, or ASL.
