Police find man's body in Shelbyville river

"We ask the public to refrain from speculation"

(SHELBYVILLE, Ind.) – Authorities in Shelby County are investigating after a deceased person was located in the Big Blue River on Sunday.

The man's body was found in the area of West Washington Avenue and the identity is not yet known.

Investigators are currently working in coordination with the Shelby County Coroner’s Office to have an autopsy performed and hopefully determine the identity of the deceased, as well as a possible cause of death,” the Shelbyville Police Department said.

The recovery has led to some rumors in the community due to the ongoing search for 61-year-old Lyle Stanton who a Silver Alert was issued for earlier this month.

Police have been conducting searches for Stanton as recently as this weekend but are urging the community to give it time for an autopsy to be performed.

“We are aware of speculation circulating on social media regarding the identity of the individual. We ask the public to refrain from speculation and allow investigators the time necessary to conduct a thorough and accurate investigation,” the department added.
