(BROOKVILLE, Ind.) – The Franklin County Sheriff’s Department is issuing a reminder to not leave children or pets in your vehicle during the extreme heat.
Temperatures are above 90 degrees with a heat index above 100 as a Heat Advisory remains in effect until Wednesday evening.
“On an 85-degree day, the inside of a car can reach over 100°F in just 10 minutes—even with the windows cracked,” the sheriff’s department said.
Police say preventable tragedies occur every summer when someone leaves a child or pet in the car.
Over the weekend, police in South Carolina rescued two dogs who were locked in a car. Watch that video, courtesy of FOX Carolina here:
The Franklin County Sheriff’s Department is offering the following tips:
• Never leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle—not even for a short errand.
• If you see a child or pet alone in a car, call 911 immediately.
• Check the back seat every time you leave the vehicle.
