(MADISON, Ind.) – A local workforce development nonprofit is speaking out after budget cuts have impacted two of their programs.
River Valley Resources (RVR) serves Southern Indiana and is urging community members to contact state and federal legislators to demand restored funding.
RVR says eight teachers have been laid off after the State of Indiana eliminated funding for Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG) program, which serves as a dropout prevention and career pathway initiative.
Last year, JAG students had a 95 percent graduation rate and earned more than $2M in scholarships. One Milan student was also elected to a national office this past spring.
RVR also has an Adult Education program that helps people with High School Equivalency prep, workforce credentials, English Language Learning, career exploration and college and military readiness.
They said a federal funding rescission forced the layoff of 11 educators in the Adult Education program.
“These aren't just budget line items,” said Margo Olson, RVR CEO. “These are lifelines that equip our neighbors with the skills to secure stable, family-supporting jobs. Without them, many will lose hope—right when they need us most.”
RVR is asking community members to contact legislators and share how the programs have impacted their lives or businesses.
“These cuts will have generational consequences,” said Konnie McCollum, Chief Operating Officer. “We must act now to protect the programs that build strong communities.”
