(WESTPORT, Ind.) – The South Decatur Class of 1979 is coming together to help one of their own.
Diane Powers was a member of that class and is a widow who is handicapped. The roof on her home was about 60 years old and there were buckets in the attic to catch water when it leaked.
“Every time the forecast called for rain I had to worry about it. My daughter and son had created a Go Fund Me but it only resulted in about $70,” Diane said.
That’s when a fellow classmate of hers heard about the much-needed repair. It led to a group message that involved other members of the 1979 Class.
The Class was able to raise the necessary funds to replace the roof and add insulation to the attic.
A roofing crew came to Diane’s house on Saturday and she now has a new roof.
“What my classmates did was amazing and has helped me tremendously. They took up the donations for all the materials and I didn’t have to pay anything. I really appreciate everyone who helped me,” Diane said.
Some members of the 1979 Class plan to insulate her uninsulated attic on Christmas Eve.
Diane’s daughter says her mother is never someone who asks for help. These past few years have been difficult due to losing her husband, suffering a double aneurysm and not being able to afford a new roof.
Her daughter said, “I am overwhelmed with gratitude for the way her classmates took it upon themselves to bless her. It brings me to tears that people care enough about her to sacrifice their time and money to make her home safe and give us all some peace of mind.”
She added, “They didn’t just help my mom, they helped me and I will forever be grateful.”
