State awards $14M to Whitewater Canal Historic Site in Metamora

(METAMORA, Ind.) – The Town of Metamora has received a major investment from the State of Indiana. 

The Whitewater Canal State Historic Site is getting $14.4 million in investments to repair and rehabilitate the area. 

State Representative Lindsay Patterson (R-District 55) says the funding was made possible through the State General Fund, the Lilly Foundation through READI 2.0, and the State Construction Fund. 

Rep. Patterson said this is a gift that not only protects the historic site, but recognizes the hard work of the people of Metamora. 

“Metamora holds a special place in my heart. It is not just a canal town—it is the heartbeat of a proud, hardworking small business community. The people of Metamora have poured their time, energy, and passion into preserving something truly unique, and they deserve this investment,” she said. 

She added that the funding will go toward critical infrastructure, preserve historic landmarks, and create real economic opportunity through tourism and small business growth. 

“Just as importantly, it sends a clear message: rural communities matter, and we are fighting to ensure they have a strong and sustainable future,” she said. "I will continue working to make sure Franklin County receives the attention, investment, and support it deserves. This is a proud day for Metamora. An even brighter future lies ahead."

State Senator Jean Leising (R-District 42) also said this funding isn’t just a win for Metamora, but a win for preserving Indiana’s state history. 

"I have spent the past several years working hard with residents, community leaders and the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites to address concerns facing the site. With this funding, many upgrades to the Whitewater Canal will be made, including stabilizing historic structures, rehabilitating the canal bed and more," Sen. Leising said.
