Switzerland Co. man charged in 2011 rape, burglary

Police say DNA comparison helped lead to arrest

(DEPUTY, Ind.) – A man has been arrested in connection to a rape that occurred 13 years ago in Jefferson County.

Indiana State Troopers began investigating a sexual assault that occurred near Deputy in July of 2011.

Investigators say a man broke into a home and assaulted a female.

Police followed several leads before the Indiana State Police Laboratory identified a potential family member of the suspect using familial DNA investigative techniques this past year.

A search warrant was issued this week to collect DNA from 37-year-old Craig Long who was identified as a suspect.

Long currently lives in Switzerland County but had previously lived in Deputy, police added.

Following a DNA comparison, Long was arrested and charged with two counts of Rape, two counts of Burglary and one count of Aggravated Burglary.

He made his initial appearance in court on Thursday where a Jefferson County judge ordered him to remain behind bars on a $500,000 bond.

The ISP was assisted during the investigation by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Switzerland County Sheriff’s Office, Jefferson County Prosecutor’s Office, and Indiana State Police Laboratory Personnel.

In early 2024, the Indiana State Police started a cold case unit which included laboratory personnel being trained in the use of Forensic Investigative Genetic Genealogy and familial DNA investigative techniques.

Jefferson County Prosecutor David Sutter said, “An arrest was made in this case due to the hard work and cooperation of investigators who continued to work on this case over the past 13 years. The expertise and skill of lab personnel trained in the use of newer DNA investigative techniques was crucial in this investigation.”
