Whitewater Valley Railroad has matching fund for flood fundraiser

(CONNERSVILLE, Ind.) – There is now a matching donation for those who want to support the Whitewater Valley Railroad as it rebuilds from catastrophic flooding.

The historic nonprofit railroad suffered millions in damage and has been forced to suspend all operations for the foreseeable future. 

The high waters destroyed portions of the track, caused damage to the engine shop and also submerged every traction motor in their inventory. 

The railroad has a long-term fundraiser underway to restore the track and all the equipment after the historic flood. 

On Sunday, they announced a $1-for-$1 match is now available. It has been made possible by the Eccles family. 

“That means every dollar you give will be matched dollar-for-dollar, doubling the impact of your generosity up to $40,000. What an incredible opportunity to come together, give, and make a lasting difference” said Whitewater Valley Railroad vice president John Sprinkle.

The Whitewater Valley Railroad has been in operation since 1867 and is a volunteer-based nonprofit headquartered in Connersville and travels through Laurel and Metamora. 

“Facing the power of the river is part of our history, and today, it is our turn to rebuild. This time, however, the challenge extends far beyond typical washouts,” Sprinkle said.
