5-car pileup, anhydrous ammonia leak in Brookville Thursday

(BROOVILLE, Ind.) – A teenager falling asleep behind the wheel may have caused five-car crash in Brookville on Thursday night.

The crash occurred around 5:20 p.m. on U.S. 52 just east of Brookville.

Franklin County deputies say 19-year-old Kira Gamble, of Connersville, said she had fallen asleep while driving which led to her colliding with a pickup truck that was hauling two anhydrous ammonia tanks.

One of the tanks ruptured and leaked anhydrous ammonia as a result of the crash.

Gamble’s vehicle also struck another car that hit a utility pole. Two other cars were unable to avoid the collision and crashed as well.

“After coming to rest, Gamble’s vehicle became fully engulfed in fire. Gamble managed to exit her vehicle prior to it becoming fully engulfed,” investigators said.

Gamble was rushed by ambulance to a Cincinnati hospital due to her injuries. Nobody was else is believed to have been hurt in the crash.

U.S. 52 was closed between Blue Creek Road and Holland Road for approximately three hours while Deputies investigated and crews cleaned up the debris.

Deputies were assisted by the Indiana State Police, Brookville Police Department, Brookville Volunteer Fire Department, Cedar Grove Volunteer Fire Department, and Letts EMS.
