(METAMORA, Ind.) – Water is expected to soon be flowing again in the Whitewater Canal in Metamora.
The canal had recently dried up after a maintenance issue at the Laurel Feeder Dam.
State officials were going to perform maintenance on the dam last week, however, there was a temporary land dispute between the state and a private property owner.
On Wednesday, it was confirmed that an agreement has been made between the state and the private property. Crews are expected to bring equipment next week to get water flowing again in the canal.
One business owner tells The 812 that this news comes as a massive relief.
“This has all been a huge strain on shopkeepers. Between no water in the canal and the false rumors of Canal Days being cancelled,” said 1838 Photography owner Robin Murrell.
Metamora Canal Day is still scheduled as normal on October 3-5.
In addition to the unique shops and business that will be open, Canal Days also feature hundreds of vendors, train rides, demonstrations at the Grist Mill, handmade crafts and more.
"It has been difficult lately but this will be a blessing to have the water back. I know people who drive from three hours away to visit Indiana's only canal town," Murrell added.
