All hands on deck for the DCUF annual Strawberry Festival

Story written by The 812's Valerie Weston

(GREENSBURG, Ind.) – It takes many groups and sponsors to make the annual Strawberry Festival happen.

The Decatur County United Fund (DCUF) has been raising money by selling strawberry shortcakes for over twenty years.

Last year they raised just shy of $1,300 and had nearly 1,247 pre-orders and about 700 orders at the tent.

This year the warm, sunny weather on Friday provided the perfect walk-up and drive-thru opportunity making for a busy tent. There was also a higher number of pre-orders, around 1,400 this year.

This event wouldn’t be possible without the many sponsors and volunteers that show up and put in the work.

The prep for these fresh and delicious strawberry shortcakes began only the day before when volunteers met to cut the cakes. They met again at 6 a.m. this morning to begin prepping the strawberries.

The fourteen members of the board of directors for the DCUF were met with an additional 70 volunteers to cut the 1,300lbs of strawberries used for Friday’s event.

In addition to the many volunteers and community that continues to come together year after year, the DCUF is thankful for their sponsors, K.B. Specialty Foods, Greensburg Community Bread of Life, and Ellis Events, for making this event possible.

“It takes a village and we definitely appreciate the additional support,” said the Decatur County United Fund Executive Director, Joane Cunningham.

The funds raised by the Strawberry Festival will go toward the United Fund campaign. They support sixteen non-profit agencies primarily focusing on education, health, and financial stability to provide resources and create positive changes in individuals’ lives.

Cunningham invites those who wish to donate to visit their website or call. She said, “Our dollars are raised to go directly back to work, so every dollar that is donated to us impacts within that year.
