(BROOKVILLE, Ind.) – Indiana DNR officials believe highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) has been the cause of death for black vultures in Franklin and Jefferson counties.
Officials say that a bird in Greene County also had contracted the avian flu.
The risk to the public is low, but humans can still contract HPAI. You should avoid contact with sick or dead waterfowl or other wildlife.
Some common signs of HPAI in birds include sudden death, neurological impairment, swelling of the head, lack of energy or appetite or nasal discharge.
If you find birds that are dead or showing the above signs, report it by clicking here.
