(BATESVILLE, Ind.) – A Batesville man facing a neurodegenerative disease is seeking assistance for a service companion.
20-year-old Cody Champion was diagnosed with Friedreich’s Ataxia which is a genetic neuromuscular disease that impacts coordination, balance, strength and endurance.
“As it continues its progression, I’ve had to think seriously about how I can remain independent, safe, and mobile for as long as possible. That led me to research service dogs for people with Friedreich’s Ataxia,” Champion said.
He has found a service animal, a Bernese Mountain Dog named Bear, to serve as a partner.
Cody is seeking donations to allow Bear to receive specialized training. He says the training takes several months.
“Bear will help me with balance, mobility, fatigue, and safety, and he will give me something just as important: confidence and independence,” he said.
A Go Fund Me fundraiser has been started and you can donate to the cause by clicking here.
