Bear photographed by Carson Hughes reunited with her surviving cub

Photo taken by Carson Hughes

(WYOMING) – A grizzly bear that was photographed by Carson Hughes in Wyoming has found her missing cub.

Carson and his family traveled to Grand Teton National Park during the summer of 2023 to explore the region.

The photo you see above is Grizzly Bear 1063, which was snapped by Carson and posted on his Instagram account on June 26, 2023.

“Before this trip my goal was to get a nice shot of a grizzly in the sage brush. This photo blew my expectations out of the water and added gorgeous wildflowers with this amazing rain,” he wrote on Instagram.

Earlier this week, staff members at Grand Teton put their focus on Grizzly Bear 1063 after two of her cubs were found deceased due to being preyed upon by a larger bear.

There was one cub that was still missing.

Park staff monitored Grizzly Bear 1063 traveling alone. Nobody knew if her cub was alive or deceased.

On Thursday, Grizzly Bear 1063 was spotted again and this time she was with a bear cub, and it happened to be the surviving cub who was alive and well.

“This is a bittersweet reminder of nature’s harshness, but also of the strength and resilience of wildlife in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem,” the staff said.

Carson was a Jac-Cen-Del senior who passed away last March. You can see more of his incredible photography and the work his family is doing to help others by clicking here.
