(BILOXI, MS.) – A longtime fishing tradition is taking place this weekend in Biloxi, Mississippi.
The 97th annual Blessing of the Fleet celebrates the start of the shrimp-fishing season and honors the region’s deep ties to the sea while seeking protection and prosperity for local fisherman.
“Rooted in faith and the working waterfront, this day honors the boats, the fishermen, and the generations who have built their lives on these waters—while celebrating one of the Coast’s most iconic industries,” organizers said.
Some activities include a ceremonial wreath drop, the Shrimp Princess Pageant, the Mass of Deceased Fishermen, arts, crafts and other entertainment.
The main ceremony takes place at Harrah's Gulf Coast Great Lawn on Sunday, May 31.
