College students honored for saving classmate who suffered cardiac arrest

Took place at Concordia University in Wisconsin

(MEQUON, WI.) –  A Wisconsin college student is alive today after quick actions from his peers.

Humberto Barraza was practicing dance moves at Concordia University when he felt chest pain.

He went back to his dorm room and then went into a seizure and sudden cardiac arrest.

Students who were nearby quickly sprung into action. One student performed CPR while another used a defibrillator.

A third student used the “I’m Responding” app to let first responders know about the emergency.

Barraza said hospital staff told him that he had flatlined three times.

The students who performed the life-saving actions, along with two campus police officers, were recognized by the university this week.

Barraza is using a cane but is now on the path toward recovery. He plans to get back to Concordia University this fall.
