(LAWRENCEBURG, Ind.) – Community members in Dearborn County have rallied together after a local homeless man passed away.
The nonprofit organization The Community Project, which assists people in need, announced the passing of Walter Stegemiller earlier this week after he was hospitalized for nearly two months.
The nonprofit became aware of Walter a few years ago while he was living in his truck.
Last year, a local woman donated her van and he lived in that until he was hospitalized.
“Walter was a gentle giant with a warm heart and a quiet spirit. He especially loved spending time at the Lawrenceburg Public Library, where the staff always greeted him with kindness and care,” said Community Project member Rachel Reynolds.
Following the announcement of his passing, community members began offering financial assistance to provide for a proper funeral.
On Thursday, Reynolds received the news that Fitch Denney Funeral Home offered to arrange the cremation for free.
The nonprofit group plans to bury Walter at Greendale Cemetery and has asked that those who offered donations to use that money toward burial donations.
"We want to thank all of you who were part of Walter’s journey. Your generosity and friendship brought dignity and comfort to his life," Reynolds added.
You can follow The Community Project by clicking here or here for more information or do donate.
The organization is planning to do an Open House at the Dearborn Adult Center for those who want to pay respects in the near future. A date has not been determined.
