(GREENSBURG, Ind.) – Community members who have unused medications can drop them off at the Decatur County Memorial Safe Drug Disposal Box.
The Safe Drug Disposal Box is located inside the Retail Pharmacy at DCMH and is a free and anonymous way to get rid of prescriptions.
It is accessible 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday as well as 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday’s.
Acceptable items are expired or unused prescription medications as well as over-the-counter medications that remain in original containers or sealed bags.
Herbal remedies, vitamins, cosmetics, needles, medical devices and illicit drugs are not accepted.
“Prescription drug misuse and environmental contamination are serious public health concerns,” said Josh Pike, PharmD, Director of Pharmacy at DCMH. “With GPG’s help and partnership, we continue to provide a safe, secure, and compliant way for our community to dispose of expired and unused medications.”
Improper disposal of medications can lead to accidental poisonings, substance misuse, and pollution of local water sources.
Saturday was National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, as the hospital encourages residents to utilize the disposal box year-round.
