Longtime Switzerland Co. School employee retiring today

(VEVAY, Ind.) – A beloved Switzerland County Schools employee is retiring after more than three decades on Friday.

Gayla Bullock serves as the Food Services Director and has worked for the school for 37 years.

Bullock has made a significant difference in the community as she has helped parents save thousands of dollars through a cafeteria program she created.

She discovered that the school district meets a threshold where all students get free meals.

It has led the school corporation to provide free breakfast and lunches daily at both elementary schools, Switzerland County Middle School and the high school.

“I did some calculations recently, where I saw another school charges $2.85 per student. It made me realize we have saved Switzerland County parents more than $300,000 so far and the year is not over,” she told The 812 last year.

The initiative not only provides free meals but also nutritious options.

Her daughter, Jennifer Canfield, helps with the farm-to-school program where they offer fresh produce and other healthy options on a daily basis.

The free program took a significant amount of work to establish but Bullock said it has been well worth it.

“I remember sending notes to parents that said their child has eaten three meals, and you need to send money. I no longer have to do it,” Bullock said.
