Decatur Co. fifth graders attend annual Ag Day

(GREENSBURG, Ind.) – More than 300 fifth graders from across Decatur County participated in the 33rd annual Ag Day on Friday. 

Decatur County Ag Day gives fifth graders a chance to explore different aspects of agriculture and safety from local experts.

It’s hosted by the Decatur County Soil & Water Conservation District and Decatur County Farm Bureau. Local FFA members also play an important role in making the event a success. 

“The goal of Ag Day is to educate and expose students to safety and the many aspects of agriculture including past, present, and future technologies,” said Decatur Co. Soil & Water district coordinator Jenna Nicholson. 

The kids spent the day discussing animals, agriculture and safety by rotating through 21 different stations.

Topics included lawn mower and electrical safety, fun facts about livestock animals, drones, tractors, animal nutrition, grains, and even gun safety. 

“Ag Day is not possible without the time and support of all the volunteers, FFA members, presenters and local businesses,” Nicholson added. 

T-Shirt contest

A few weeks before Ag Day, each fifth grader was given the opportunity to design a shirt that students wore during the event. 

The theme was ‘250 Years of Freedom, Farming and Feeding America’ and Ag Day organizers say they received tons of awesome submissions. 

“It couldn’t be narrowed down to just one design, so two designs were combined into one,” Nicholson explained. 

St. Mary’s fifth graders Olivia Hoeing and Lanceton Dickman were named the winners of the contest. These t-shirts were given to all the students, teachers, FFA members and presenters.
