(GREENSBURG, Ind.) – Decatur County REMC and Decatur County Community Foundation are providing a gift to keep firefighters safe.
The organizations have donated two voltage detectors to each fire department in the county.
The detectors are specialized safety tools that alert firefighters to the presence of electrical current in hazardous environments. These devices help reduce the risk of electrical injury when responding to incidents where energized equipment or downed power lines may be present.
“Providing continuous voltage detection equipment is one way we can add an extra layer of protection, helping ensure firefighters are alerted to the presence of electricity at all times while serving others,” said Brett Abplanalp, Decatur County REMC CEO.
Electrocution is a threat to firefighters when responding to emergencies. A firefighter in central New York was killed by electrocution after responding to an accident this past summer.
DCCF Executive Director Tami Wenning added that the foundation is proud to provide another safety tool to first responders.
