Dillsboro TIF district vote put on hold following public hearing

(LAWRENCEBURG, Ind.) – It was a contentious public hearing at the Dearborn County Redevelopment Commission meeting on Monday night.

The commission is currently considering the implementation of a TIF district along U.S. 50 in Dillsboro.

The proposed 1,400-acre district has been introduced as a way to bring economic development to the Clay Township area while addressing blighted properties in Lake Dilldear.

Opponents along with those in favor had their voices heard during the meeting last night.

“What I’ve discovered is the rural qualities of this region, the beauty of this region,  that is the asset of this region. Don’t sell that asset off.  These qualities are not incidental, they are central to why people want to be here,” said Sephen Otte who is opposed to the current proposal.

During the meeting, local attorney Rhett Dennerline offered some proposed changes to the measure.

The proposal Dennerline provided would likely impact less farmland and residential areas within the area.

The board tabled the vote last night as they will now consider Dennerline’s proposal.

Another public hearing will be held at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, December 17 at the Dearborn County Government Center in Lawrenceburg.

Toward the end of the meeting, one attendee credited the commission for listening to community feedback.

“What you all did tonight is something that is becoming less common. For you to address concerns from the community means more than you know,” the attendee said.
