Drivers urged to use caution; turn around, don't drown

(NEW POINT, Ind.) – While a lot of attention is currently on the rising rivers and creeks, drivers need to be aware of standing water on roadways as well. 

The photo above shows a vehicle that attempted to drive through standing water in Fayette County on Wednesday. 

“Please do not attempt to drive through standing water. It’s nearly impossible to tell if there is still a road surface underneath,” officials said. 

Standing water and flooded roadways are beginning to impact more roads in each county in Southeast Indiana. 

Here are some facts provided by the National Weather Service:

•  Six inches of water will reach the bottom of most passenger cars causing loss of control and possible stalling.

• A foot of water will float many vehicles.

• Two feet of rushing water can carry away most vehicles including sport utility vehicles (SUV’s) and pick-ups. 

State and highway crews are implementing road closures, however, be aware of standing water on roads that remain open. 

Indiana State Police Superintendent and Greensburg resident Anthony Scott is among the state officials monitoring the situation.

“We urge everyone to avoid areas with high water, as conditions can change rapidly and unpredictably,” Scott said. “Please obey all road closures, never attempt to drive or walk through flooded roadways, and remember the lifesaving rule: turn around, don't drown."
