Farmer helps first responders reach drowning child in Rush County

(RUSHVILLE, Ind.) – A farmer helped first responders get to a child that was drowning in Rush County during the flooding on Wednesday night. 

The 2-year-old was found in a flooded basement and his mother performed life-saving measures while first responders were responding.

While enroute, first responders encountered roads that were impassable in several locations, and the home was surrounded by deep water.

A farmer helped first responders reach the home and then helped transport the child and family members from the residence. 

More life-saving measures were conducted before the child was airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital for further treatment. The child’s current condition was not disclosed. 

The Rush County Sheriff’s Office credited the farmer who assisted the first responders as well as the family. 

"This is a tragic situation. Our thoughts are with the child and the family. We also appreciate the quick response from emergency personnel and the local farmer who helped reach the residence during the flooding,” said Detective Randy M. Meek. 

The incident was investigated and has been deemed a tragic accident.
