(VATICAN CITY) – The first ever American has been elected as Pope of the Catholic Church.
69-year-old Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost is a native of Chicago and will assume the name of Pope Leo XIV.
He is the 267th Pope and was named a Cardinal by Pope Francis in 2023.
The election comes after 133 cardinals gathered for a conclave at the Sistine Chapel since Tuesday.
Pope LEO XIV also has Peruvian citizenship as he lived in Peru for several years, both as a missionary and an archbishop.
