(GREENSBURG, Ind.) – Greensburg High School has a group called the Young Men’s Club which was created to build up the next generation of Christian men.
The group recently participated in a wilderness retreat at the YMCA Flatrock River Camp in St. Paul.
The retreat began by the high schoolers helping clean, repair and maintain facilities for the park.
In return, the YMCA provides access to the property, certified staff for specialized activities, and even sleeping bags or hammocks for those who need them—all at no cost to the program.
Led by men from local churches, the retreat tested the students both physically and mentally, from camping outside, to hiking and workouts.
“Throughout the weekend, participants take part in physically and mentally challenging adventures such as rock climbing, zip lining, team-building courses, high ropes confidence challenges, survival skills training, orienteering, fire building, and primitive camping,” said club sponsor Aaron Mentz.
The weekend concluded with the students being baptized. There have been a total of 22 students over the past two years who have taking part in the baptisms.
The mission continues year-round. Every Friday morning before school, members gather in the GHS field house for a militaristic-style workout. These sessions are intentionally challenging, built to push the young men past comfort, teaching them to depend on one another for encouragement, strength, and endurance.
Greensburg High School now also has a Christian Young Women’s Club which launched this year. Both groups work in partnership with the school’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
