(GREENSBURG, Ind.) – A recent Greensburg graduate is organizing a community initiative to support a third grader who is going through a difficult medical journey.
9-year-old Myla Speer was diagnosed as an infant with the rare neurological condition known as Sturge-Weber Syndrome.
The Greensburg third grader has dealt with seizures and stroke-like episodes throughout her young life.
Last week, she and her family traveled to Boston for a major brain surgery and Speer is now in recovery.
“I know the love and prayers we've had from everywhere, especially back home, have helped get Myla to where she is right now! We will be moved to a rehab facility here very soon and get her working that much harder so we can come home,” her mom, Molly, said.
Myla and her family will likely be in Boston for the next several months.
It’s a story that has touched many in the community including Greensburg 2025 graduate Kenzie Ebbing.
Ebbing and her classmates first met Myla after organizing a powderpuff game to raise money for her last spring.
“Ever since I met her all I see is how she's a big ball of light and joy and it's crazy how she and her family stay so optimistic through it all. They are very inspiring and I want to help bring more happiness to Myla in anyway possible,” Ebbing said.
Kenzie is now organizing an initiative in coordination with her fellow graduates.
They are asking all community members to send Get Well Cards to Myla by March 6.
“We as classmates will certainly be making get well cards and maybe even baskets, but we hope many more people do too,” Ebbing explained.
The cards can be dropped off at the Greensburg Community High School main office during regular school hours.
The gift cards will be shipped to Boston following the March 6 deadline.
