(INDIANAPOLIS) – A local mother and son attended a naturalization ceremony at the Indianapolis airport last week.
Guilford resident Sandy Mahoney is a member of the Twin Forks Chapter of the Daughter of the American Revolution in Brookville.
During each naturalization ceremony, a different DAR chapter hands out small USA flags to new Americans.
It was Twin Forks turn and Mahoney volunteered to represent the chapter.
Her son, Nathan, is the president of the Children of the American Revolution chapter known as Little Eagle Creek Society.
Sandy and Nathan attended the ceremony where 95 people from 42 countries took the Oath of Citizenship on Thursday.
It was touching for Sandy as her father had immigrated from Italy many years ago.
“Neither of us had ever been to one of these ceremonies. It was a good way to see what my father went through and share that with Nathan. It was also a great opportunity to welcome those that have spent many years getting to this day and show them that they are one of us now,” Mahoney told The 812.
She recalls how happy and excited the 95 people were when they officially became U.S. citizens.
“I'm inspired by these men and women that had the courage to leave behind everything they knew and loved to find freedom and opportunity in the USA,” she said.
Mahoney added, “If people could only see the joy and happiness that poured out of them the moment Judge Kendra Klump declared them American Citizens, I think they would appreciate all that God has given them as Americans from birth.”
