(KNIGHTSTOWN, Ind.) – The Hoosier Youth Challenge Academy (HYCA) in Knightstown will close this summer, according to a letter obtained by The 812.
The academy offers military-based training to teens who are considered at-risk and haven’t yet graduated high school.
It was established in Indiana in 1993 and is one of about 40 that exist nationwide.
According to a letter sent to staff members, HYCA will close on June 30 due to financial considerations.
“Staff are asked to continue supporting and completing the current class so that cadets receive the same level of instruction, professionalism, and commitment that has defined this Academy over the years,” the letter stated.
A petition to keep the academy open has been created by a parent who credits HYCA for providing guidance and structure to her child.
“The Hoosier Youth ChalleNGe Academy has been a beacon of hope and transformation for countless young people in Indiana. The Academy provides at-risk youth with the tools and support needed to redirect their lives positively,” the parent stated.
