(BROWN COUNTY, Ind.) – Horseman’s Campground at Brown County State Park was among the hardest hit areas in southern Indiana during Friday’s storms.
At least one horse and a dog were killed during the storm, and there were additional reports of injuries to people. Fortunately, there was no loss of human life.
The storms also caused damage to campers, vehicles and downed hundreds of trees.
The campground and horse trails will be closed for an undetermined amount of time due to the amount of damage.
“There won’t be any horse riding for awhile, it’s pretty bad, I’ve heard up to two months [that it could be closed], but I don’t know that,” said Pastor Dean Manuel.
On Saturday, campers were evacuated and the entrance to the campground was blocked off.
Cleanup operations are expected to begin Sunday with heavy machinery.
Horseman’s Campground has also received offers from volunteers who want to help. However, the area is not deemed safe at the moment for volunteers but they will be needed at a later date.
While the campground is closed, other areas of Brown County State Park remain open.
