(ALDERSON, WV) – A national nonprofit brought incarcerated women and their children together for Easter.
The group God Behind Bars partnered with the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) for a special reunion at a West Virginia prison.
23 incarcerated mothers were able to trade their prison uniforms for Easter dresses.
The nonprofit said this was the first time some of the moms met their children, and many others had been separated for more than 3 years.
“For these children, this moment was different… they didn’t just see their mother incarcerated they saw her in a beautiful dress, restored and wrapped in dignity,” God Behind Bars stated.
BOP added that incarcerated individuals who maintain family connections through visits are up to 26% less likely to return to prison.
