Initiative to identify unmarked African American graves in Rising Sun

An event will be held February 24

(RISING SUN, Ind.) – The Ohio County Historical Society has taken the initiative to research and identify some unmarked graves in the community.

They believe the graves belong to African Americans from around the time of the Underground Railroad.

The unmarked graves are located at Cedar Hedge and Union cemeteries.

Ohio County Historical Society executive director Cliff Thies said they have not been able to confirm the number of graves but continue to do research.

The historical agency also welcomes community members to learn more about the project.

While research continues, Rising Sun resident Derrick Davis has organized a community event as a way to honor those whose graves currently remain unmarked.

“I really want to get the story out there for those who don’t have a voice anymore. I think this is a significant project and I look forward to having more people join the cause,” Davis said.

Davis has organized “The Walk for 200 Souls” at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, February 24.

Anybody is welcome to join as the group will walk together from the Rising Sun Library to the historical site that contains some of those unmarked graves.

The historical museum is open Mondays through Fridays from 10-4 as well as weekends from 12-4 p.m. at 212 Walnut Street in Rising Sun.

The museum has some unique attractions include the Hoosier Boy racing boat and the AUTO-HARP, which is the first coin-operated music player.
