(SEYMOUR, Ind.) – A Jackson County family is turning their tragedy into a national movement to save others on the farm.
It’s been one year since a tractor accident claimed the lives of 4-year-old Maverick Flinn and his great-grandmother, Nancy Fox.
“As always, it happened suddenly, in a moment of inattention during an otherwise typical, busy harvest,” the family said.
Following the tragedy, a friend asked Nancy’s husband what they could do to help.
He spontaneously texted back, “Take a Maverick Minute.”
It’s turned into a message to farm families everywhere: Take a minute to pause and check your surroundings while working.
“The epidemic of farming deaths didn’t start with Maverick, but encouraging everyone to take a minute in his name can help end it,” the family said.
On this first anniversary, the Maverick Minute Foundation has just announced a strategic partnership with the Future Farmers of America (FFA) to bring their message to a nationwide audience.

Their mission is simple: Pause, Inspect and Protect.
“Take a breath, be present and aware. Check your surroundings, equipment, and blind spots. Confirm everyone is clear. Then proceed,” the family said.
Maverick’s dad and grandfather are Seymour firefighters. Following the tragedy the fire department named a firetruck in Maverick’s honor.
